When I tasted Hormel Compleats slow cooker diced braising steak & Peppers With Noodles Dinner, I liked it. The beef steak is tender, the noodles soft and yummy, the sauce is good, the veggies great! This meal has enriched egg noodles, beef, carrots, green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, red bell peppers, teriyaki sauce, garlic, spices and many other ingredients. Yum! I can tell that the Hormel folks tried to create a tasty dinner. It could use a bit more flavoring but, other than that, it is very good! This meal does fill me up.

The six course French dinner I'm preparing for friends is coming along nicely. Julia Child can keep her complicated easy beef stew bourguignon recipe because I know the methods behind it. It's no different than Chicken Marsala or Beef Stroganoff.

But Julee Rosso's recipe for Beef Stew with Eggplant (from Great Good Food, p. 487) had me combining coriander and paprika with cinnamon, allspice and cayenne pepper! Who wudda thunk that such a wild combination would make such an intriguingly delicious stew?

One of the advantages of the cast iron utensils is its ability to retain heat. That means that the heat is equally distributed thus allowing you to cook your food evenly. This is very crucial since we don't want a dish that is undercooked or overcooked. We usually regulate the heat of our stoves to be able to cook the dish more evenly. It wouldn't hurt if we get a little help from our pots and pans, would it? Uneven cooking is a problem that sprouts when cooking with non-iron cookware. An undercooked or overcooked meal is not very appetizing.
You ate the cafeteria food too. Meals were supplemented with government surplus stacked to the ceiling at the end of the long room, a stack which grew shorter as the year progressed. The brown pasteboard boxes were filled with cans of beef casserole, lima beans, string beans and hominy. The big high school boys were allowed extra helpings on hot dog day, the only "junk food" served. There was no pizza. Pizza was something someone who had been to Chicago or D.C. had heard of. Kids cleaned their plates and went outside to run around (the elementary school ones) or chatted up the high school girl or boy you had your eye on. There was the rare fat kid - but if you look back at the class picture he was nowhere near the size of even sorta fat people you see at the mall nowadays.
Because of the seemingly radical step we took to ensure this dog's survival, it wasn't something I discussed openly. Too many people out there feel that if a dog can't eat on his own, he's not meant to live. To them I say, "Phooey." The dog wanted to live, to survive and feel the hand of those who loved him rubbing his ears. But he couldn't eat. His spirit was willing and he would have done anything to please me, but this one thing he couldn't do. How then, was I to deny him the one thing I could do to help him?

I like Mr. Bacon and Monsieur Tofu ($6.99) so much that I bought it for myself. However, when the Gumby-like toys arrived in the mail yesterday, I decided I was being selfish and I gave them to my 2-year old. I promise, though, they're appropriate for grown-ups, too. They're just so funny.

It would sure beat those useless vigilantes with their silly red berets. There is no difference between them and concerned citizens roaming their neighborhoods with baseball bats and two way radios. They just get good publicity in their cute little berets. They are allowed to roam your neighborhood and you are not. They are allowed to be vigilantes and you are not.
I sit down with the supermarket ad that comes out in Wednesday's paper, and since I don't go shopping until Saturday, I have plenty of time to create my budget meal plan for the coming week.
